“I love to tell the story again and again, of how it all got started way back when…” (c)Mc Shan.

During the mid 90′s Dave Hammer aka “Dj Fate-ILL” aka “Dumpy” started executive producing and financing ground breaking Independant Hip Hop music with bay area friend and record producer Fanatik (from early Stones Throw fame), under his label Heratik Records. They released influential records like Planet Asia’s first EP and Beat Junkies Dj Babu and Rhettmatic’s “Wild Stylus” album. Photobucket

Around the same time Dumpy owned the vinyl shop BP Records, which slanged all the new hip-hop 12″s and LP’s of the time. The store was located alongside the street wear/graffiti supply/HipHop shop Funksion in Salt Lake City, in which they shared a basement that doubled as a recording studio (where Fanatik would craft some of the beats for Planet Asia’s EP).

Around 1998 Funksion co-owner Brisk Oner and Dumpy started a new a label and named it Funksion Records to help promote the shop (Concise and Finale worked there as well). The first release was the extremely influential LP by Dose One “Hemispheres”. The album featured soon to be hiphop legends such as Mr. Len of Company Flow, J Rawls, Mr. Dibbs, and JEL, and also had cover artwork by Brisk himself. Dose would go on to help create the Anticon movement shortly after. Photobucket

The second release would be a 12″ by the collabrative group Status Quo which consisted of Philidelphia’s own queen mc Bahamadia, up and coming Concise Kilgore from San Diego, and Brisk Oner on the beats.

Soon after they changed the labels name from Funksion Records to Netweight Records. The first release under the new Netweight label was a special edition collectable 45rpm 7″ remix of the Status Quo song “Plead the Fifth”, with the Concise solo track “Iceland Confidential” on the B-Side.

Netweight Records and it’s collective have been a supporting force of the influential independant Hip Hop music of the last decade or so. In 2008, in-house producer and collaberator Finale Grand took over as operations manager/creative director of the label. Today Netweights formula remains the same and continues to break new ground and influence the rap game by introducing new artist like Enee One and by releasing collabrative projects like The Anarchy Gang: 24 HRS with Prince Po (Organized Konfusion), Zumbi(Zion I), and Concise KIlgore.

Netweight continues to evolve and grow with the ever changing music industry and technology of today while keeping innovation, creativity, quality, and integrity of the music at the forefront.
